The Wizard of Oz: A TESOL Tale

This spring marked the 50th anniversary of the TESOL International Association. The convention in Baltimore was sprinkled with various celebrations of the big event. One such celebration was a musical production, The Wizard of Oz: A TESOL Tale.  In this retelling of the Wizard of Oz story, the heroine, Dorothy, is blown 50 years forward in time from the very first TESOL Convention in 1966. It is up to Professor Marvel, the good witch Glinda, along with the Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman, and Cowardly Lion to bring her up to speed on everything she has missed over the 50 years of TESOL’s history.  The show—filled with horrible puns—was written by former TESOL president H. Douglas Brown, who played the role of Professor Marvel. He was ably assisted by Dorothy Zemach, who played the role of Dorothy. Other cast members included former TESOL presidents Mary Ann Christison, Mark Algren, and Jun Liu. Plus yours truly as the Scarecrow. Take a look. Hope you’ll enjoy it!
