SUMMARY:Empowering Your Students with Media Literacy
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of a series sponsored by the Office of Eng
lish Language Programs from the U.S. Department of State. The intended aud

world. If this is you\, please contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Region
al English Language Officer for details on how to register. To accomodate
those in different time zones\, the talk will be presented twice\, once at
8:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time and then again at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Dayli
ght Time.\n\nHere's a description of what we'll talk about:\n\nEach day En
glish language students absorb messages from newspapers\, magazines\, tele
vision\, radio\, and many forms of social media. Just as we help our stude
nts to read\, listen to\, and understand English\, we also want to help th
em develop critical thinking skills to understand and assess the informati
on they obtain through different forms of media. In this webinar we will p
resent activities to help students ask key questions about the  messages
found in news and social media. We will examine specific media texts and e
ngage in hands-on evaluation techniques that can be used in class with stu
 dents.
